Situated along Sicily’s southern coast, Porto Empedocle is a town that boasts not only a fascinating history but also stunning beaches and breathtaking landscapes. Founded in 403 BC by Greek colonists under the name “Emporium”, the town was subsequently occupied by the Romans and later by the Arabs, who left indelible marks of their rule in terms of architecture and culture alike. Its strategic location has always made it highly coveted territory, and this is why the town was known in the late Middle Ages as Marina di Girgenti, the harbour of the city of Agrigento, a place of commerce and trade.

In the mid-16th century, to protect this important commercial port, an ancient existing tower was restored and incorporated into the coastal warning and defence system. The structure known as the Torre del caricatore (Loader’s Tower) of Girgento still exists today and is one of the town’s symbols. The fishing village of Marina gained independence from Agrigento only in the mid-19th century as Molo di Girgenti, and subsequently changed its name to Porto Empedocle in commemoration of the celebrated Agrigentine philosopher Empedocles.

Over the past century, the town has greatly developed its tourism vocation, becoming a much sought-after summer destination and a favourite with tourists from all over the world. In addition to its stunning golden beaches, this area is also home to important archaeological sites, buildings of great historical interest and a truly unique and authentic atmosphere. What’s more, the town has become famous as the birthplace of Andrea Camilleri, the author of the celebrated Inspector Montalbano.

Beaches in Porto Empedocle

Many would not hesitate to say that the beaches of Porto Empedocle are among the most enchanting in all of Sicily, thanks in part to the crystal-clear waters. One of the area’s most famous beaches is undoubtedly Lido Azzurro, so called for the colour of the sea, which invites both adults and children to dive in and snorkel to admire the rich underwater life. Located west of the town centre, it boasts an extremely long stretch of fine golden sand with bathing facilities that offer all services and numerous restaurants.

Close by is another charming beach, Marinella, which features golden sand and crystal-clear, calm waters. Ideal for families and those seeking convenience, this beach offers a wide range of services, from sun lounger and parasol hire to water activities. All around the shoreline is lush Mediterranean vegetation, perfect for nature walks. A short distance from the town centre is also Spiaggia del Caos, which despite its name is a peaceful stretch of beach ideal for those seeking relaxed days in the sun. The beauty of this beach, characterised by fine golden sand and waters with a thousand shades, was also appreciated by Luigi Pirandello, who mentioned it several times in his works.

Finally, close to Porto Empedocle is the municipality of Realmonte, which is home to the famous beach of Scala dei Turchi (Turks’ Staircase), known for its white marl cliffs that plunge into turquoise waters. The Scala dei Turchi takes its name from the cliff, which in certain places resembles a staircase that, according to some legends, served as a landing site for pirates of Arab origin (mistakenly called “Turks”) who repeatedly plundered the area.

What to See in Porto Empedocle

The Scala degli Scrittori (Writers’ Staircase) in Porto Empedocle

Beyond its enchanting beaches, Porto Empedocle boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage that’s worth exploring to better understand the area’s history and traditions. The town’s emblem is undoubtedly the Torre del caricatore of Girgento, an imposing tower built in the 16th century on the foundations of a previous tower that once served to protect the coast from Saracen invasions. Given its great defensive importance, it has always been subject to significant restoration work, the most important of which was undertaken by the Emperor Charles V, which is why it is also called the Torre di Carlo V (Charles V Tower). Once its defensive function was abandoned, the tower was converted in the 19th century into a prison, which was closed only in the early 20th century. It has now been converted into a cultural centre where events and exhibitions are held, and from its highest level it is possible to enjoy a magnificent view of the shoreline.

The town of Porto Empedocle boasts a truly fascinating historic centre with a typical maritime atmosphere that allows for a genuine journey back in time. Walking through the paved streets, you can admire coloured houses, little shops, various restaurants and inns, and two rather distinctive statues: one of Luigi Pirandello and one of Inspector Montalbano.

Walking through the heart of the town you can reach the Mother Church of Porto Empedocle, dedicated to the Holiest Saviour, Saint Gerlando and the Immaculate. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it boasts a sumptuous staircase leading to the main entrance, which is set in a simple and sober façade. Inside, there is a single nave with side chapels adorned with various decorations, precious canvases and numerous statues of saints. Exploration of the town can continue with a visit to the old Railway Station of Porto Empedocle, which has now been converted into a museum where you can discover the history and importance that this railway hub had in the early 20th century. Large quantities of sulphur and salt arrived at Porto Empedocle and were then distributed via a narrow-gauge steam-powered railway line.

For nature lovers, a visit to the Torre Salsa Nature Reserve is recommended, a protected area offering hiking trails immersed in Sicilian flora and fauna. Finally, once you reach Porto Empedocle, a visit to the nearby Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, less than 12 km away, is a must. This is an archaeological site of great importance that preserves ancient temples.
