Is Palermo Sicily’s most important airport? No, Catania is the region’s busiest hub. Catania Vincenzo Bellini International Airport, Fontanarossa (IATA code: CTA) is Sicily and southern Italy’s primary airport, and Italy’s fifth busiest by passenger traffic, handling over 12 million travellers in 2025.
Catania airport’s expansion has been bolstered by its strategic location, which facilitates connections with central and northern Italy, and by growing interest from both national and low-cost carriers in this facility.
It’s the most convenient airport for a holiday in eastern Sicily, but it’s worth considering even if you’re heading elsewhere: the extensive range of flights to Catania often means you’ll find better prices than at other airports.
The modern terminal features bars, shops and restaurants, plus useful services such as lounges and fast-track, car hire desks and reasonably-priced car parks. The airport has a Terminal A, the main terminal, and a Terminal C, dedicated to easyJet flights.
Catania airport is just 7 km from the city centre. From here you can easily reach Catania and other parts of Sicily by bus, taxi or hire car.
The most economical way to get from the airport to Catania’s city centre is the Alibus, a shuttle service run by AMT. The bus connects the airport to Central Station, passing the port and historic centre, with 15 stops and a journey time of around 20 minutes.
Buses run approximately every 25 minutes, on weekdays and weekends alike. The service operates from early morning until late at night. A ticket costs €4 and is valid for 90 minutes on other AMT city buses too, making it especially good value if you need to continue your journey around the city on another bus. Buy it on board in cash or by card, via the AMT Catania app or at authorised retailers.
The Alibus bus stops are on the right as you exit the terminal’s arrivals area.
If you prefer a more comfortable journey, taxi is the fastest and most practical option. Given the short distance between the airport and city centre, the journey takes around 15 minutes and is reasonably priced.
A taxi from Catania airport to the city centre costs around €30 during the day, rising to approximately €36 at night or on public holidays. Taxi ranks are located just outside the arrivals area.
Alternatively, you can book a private transfer in advance, with the advantage of a fixed price and a driver waiting for you on arrival.
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Catania Airport airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.

Since 2021, Catania airport has had a railway station, Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, served by regional trains with direct connections to Catania Centrale, Messina, Syracuse and other Sicilian cities. Journey time to Catania Centrale is around 11-22 minutes depending on the train.
The station is roughly 700 metres from the terminal and isn’t directly accessible on foot: a free shuttle bus operated by AMT is available to get you from the terminal to the railway station, with a short 3-minute journey. Train services run daily, though frequencies are currently more limited than the bus service. For up-to-date timetables and tickets, consult the Trenitalia website.
Hiring a car at Catania airport is recommended, and sometimes essential, if Catania isn’t your final destination. A car will let you explore the island at your leisure and reach areas not served by public transport.
The airport is easily accessible by car via Provincial Road 70. From the A19 motorway (Palermo-Catania), exit at “Zia Lisa” following signs, whilst from the A18 (Syracuse-Catania), continue on the E45 ring road to the “Asse dei servizi” exit.
