Catania is a city steeped in history and charm, making it an ideal destination at any time of year thanks to its excellent location and wonderfully mild and temperate climate. Although Catania, and Sicily in general, is hugely popular during the summer months, the best times to visit the city are the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.
In particular, the most recommended months are April, May, June and September, when temperatures are pleasant without being excessive, and you can both enjoy a swim in the sea and explore the attractions without battling intense heat or contending with overcrowded streets and beaches. During summer, Catania experiences average temperatures of around 32°C, with the highest peaks occurring in July and August.
During the winter season, temperatures are fairly mild, though you may encounter particularly rainy days and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. In winter, however, you can also admire the snow-capped summit of Mount Etna providing a stunning backdrop to the city, and during the Christmas period you can take part in the numerous events organised in Catania’s centre for the occasion.
