The Lampedusa Airport (IATA code: LMP) is the main gateway to Lampedusa island, the largest of the Pelagian Islands and the southernmost point of Italy. The airport is located in the east-central part of the island, approximately 2 km from the town centre, a distance so short that within a few minutes by car — or even on foot if you’re travelling light — you’ll already be in the heart of the island.
The airport is managed by AST Aeroservizi S.p.A., a company wholly owned by AST – Autolinee Trasporti Sicilia. It’s a small-scale airport, designed primarily for seasonal tourist traffic and regional continuity flights that guarantee connections with Sicily year-round. From Palermo and Catania, daily flights are operated by DAT VoliSicilia in both summer and winter, whilst from May to October the airport comes to life with direct flights from Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, Verona, Bologna, Bergamo, Forlì, Perugia and Malta, served by airlines including EasyJet, Wizz Air, Volotea, ITA Airways, HelloFly and Air Mediterranean. If you’re travelling outside these months, you’ll almost certainly need to connect through Palermo or Catania.
The close proximity between the airport and the town is what sets this airport apart: few other Italian airports can boast such a convenient location relative to the town centre. That said, if you’re travelling with luggage and it’s the height of summer, it’s still advisable to use a transport option to cover even these few kilometres.
The airport is served by the Red Circular Line of the local public transport network, which connects the main points of the island with a dedicated stop in the immediate vicinity of the terminal. Buses depart every 50 minutes or so, and a ticket costs €1.20. The bus stop is located at the intersection of Via Cala Creta and the road leading to the terminal; up-to-date timetables are displayed on a notice board at the stop itself.
It’s the most economical option if you’re not in a hurry and travelling with minimal luggage, bearing in mind that services are limited and buses can get crowded during peak season.
Taxis are available at the exit from the arrivals terminal and are the most convenient choice for getting to your accommodation without waiting, especially if you have heavy luggage or are arriving late in the evening. Given that the journey is very short, the fare is reasonable. There are no published fixed rates, but the short distance means the cost is generally affordable. During peak season it’s advisable to book in advance through your hotel, particularly on days with heavier flight arrivals.
Car hire company offices are located within the terminal arrivals area, with vehicles parked in the dedicated area in front of the terminal. Hiring a car in Lampedusa is convenient for exploring the island independently, but bear in mind that it’s a very small island — just over 20 km² — and traffic can be heavy during peak season. The airport has a supervised car park in front of the terminal, open daily and equipped with CCTV, useful if you’re returning with your own vehicle.
To rent a car in Sicily we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
If you’re travelling light and arriving during the cooler hours, walking to the town centre is a realistic option: the roughly 2 km route can be covered in under 25 minutes on an asphalt road. It’s not advisable during the hottest hours of July and August, but on spring or autumn mornings it can be a pleasant introduction to the island.
