Balestrate is one of the settlements along Sicily’s coast that overlooks the Gulf of Castellammare, renowned for its unspoilt beaches, crystal-clear waters and a land steeped in history. This territory has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic and has been shaped by major civilisations including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, each leaving its mark on the region.

In particular, the settlement in its current location was founded by the Byzantines, who built a small fishing village amongst the defensive towers that dotted the Castellammare Gulf. During the Arab rule, the village expanded and the Arabs introduced an irrigation system (called sìqayah in Arabic and “Secchiaria” in Sicilian) to water sugar cane crops and other produce such as olives and citrus fruit.

Another turning point came in the 16th century with the construction of a tuna fishery, which not only provided new jobs but also sparked fresh development for Balestrate. The town’s economy still centres on fishing and agriculture, sectors that have been joined by tourism over the past century. Indeed, Balestrate boasts an extensive shoreline characterised by golden sand and emerald waters that attracts countless visitors during the summer months, drawn by its warm hospitality and gastronomic heritage.

Balestrate’s beaches

The Balestrate coastline, stretching nearly 8 km, is the heart of this destination, offering long stretches of golden sand washed by crystal-clear, warm, shallow waters with gently sloping sandy seabeds. Combined with the presence of beach clubs offering full facilities, these characteristics make Balestrate a favourite among families with children and those seeking relaxation. It’s also worth noting that Balestrate beach is spacious and lengthy, renowned not only for its pristine appeal but also for its cleanliness.

Beyond the main beach, there are quieter coves and secluded bays where you can lay your towel and sunbathe for hours away from the crowds. Heading west from the harbour, you’ll find Sicciara Cove, also known as Scalo Vecchio, Grotte Bay, Drago Cove and Baia Gaia on the border with Alcamo Marina. These are all peaceful, mostly free beaches, flanked on one side by the blue sea and on the other by lush green vegetation.

Things to do in Balestrate

Beyond its breathtaking beaches, Balestrate offers a range of cultural and natural sites worth discovering, along with numerous restaurants serving delicious local cuisine paired with renowned Sicilian wines. Exploring the town begins in its charming historic centre, characterised by cobbled lanes, grand palaces belonging to noble families and ancient churches that offer a genuine step back in time. Walking through the town, you’ll easily reach the main square, dedicated to Rector Filippo Evola, where the Mother Church, also known as the Church of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, stands as a true architectural masterpiece. Built in the mid-19th century, this religious building boasts a neoclassical façade with two bell towers and a three-nave interior housing some highly valuable paintings.

Throughout the town are not only palaces built in the 19th century by wealthy families of the era (such as the Barretta, Bommarito, Chimenti and Taormina families) but also several historic industrial buildings constructed by families invested in the area’s wine trade. Among these were English establishments such as the Ingham wine plant (19th century) and the Woodhouse wine plant (first half of the 19th century). Nature lovers can easily reach the Zingaro Nature Reserve, which offers trails through Mediterranean flora and fauna with breathtaking sea views.
