The Madonie Park is a nature reserve that spans approximately 400 square kilometres in the north-central area of Sicily. This verdant oasis is home to distinctive fauna and flora, with numerous tree species that grow nowhere else in the world. Established in 1989, the Park encompasses the Madonie mountain massif, which stretches between the Imera and Pollina rivers along the island’s northern coast, and Pizzo Carbonara, a peak that at 1,979 metres is Sicily’s second-highest summit after Mount Etna. Within the park you’ll find charming villages, museums, picturesque ski resorts and numerous trails for hiking or cycling.

What to See in the Park

The village of Castelbuono

Beyond hosting rare tree species found only in Sicily, the Madonie Park offers distinctive wildlife and areas of considerable geological interest. The Park encompasses fifteen municipalities, all within the province of Palermo: Caltavuturo, Castelbuono, Castellana Sicula, Cefalù, Collesano, Geraci Siculo, Gratteri, Isnello, Petralia Soprana, Petralia Sottana, Polizzi Generosa, Pollina, San Mauro Castelverde, Scillato and Sclafani Bagni.

Some of these towns are worth discovering, such as Sclafani Bagni, one of Sicily’s smallest villages, and Geraci Siculo, a village characterised by narrow, winding cobbled streets whose history is intertwined with the Ventimiglia family. Those who love the sea can visit Cefalù, renowned for its stunning beaches bathed in crystal-clear waters and its dramatic headland, which harbours the remains of a medieval castle.

For those seeking towns where time seems to have stood still, Castelbuono is worth visiting, with its magnificent Ventimiglia Castle, as are Petralia Soprana and Petralia Sottana, two evocative medieval settlements. Also noteworthy are Polizzi Generosa, an elegant historic centre characterised by churches and monuments perched on a rocky outcrop at over one thousand metres altitude, and the delightful town of San Mauro, which offers stunning views across the Aeolian Islands and the entire Madonie mountain range.

The park is also home to an excellent food and wine heritage based on local specialities such as badda beans, Polizzi horn peppers, Scillato apricots and traditional Sicilian cheeses produced from sheep and goat herds.

Trekking in the Park

The Madonie Park is a place of considerable charm, which is why many visitors forego a few beach days to immerse themselves in nature and the park’s tranquillity. Numerous trails are available, ranging from very easy family-friendly routes to more challenging ones, allowing for peaceful days spent amid verdant surroundings. Some itineraries are suitable for cycling, whilst others are ideal for Nordic walking or horse riding. Many routes offer stunning views of woodlands, lakes, waterfalls, rare flora species such as Abies Nebrodensis (a near-extinct coniferous tree) and Pagliai—small stone structures once used by locals to store tools.

Among the most recommended trekking routes is the Madonie Trek, which departs from Polizzi Generosa and extends for approximately 80 km, passing through locations including Madonna dell’Alto, Monte San Salvatore, Piano Pomo, Pizzo Carbonara, Piano Battaglia, Piano Zucchi and Valle Giumenta. The route can be completed in stages over several days and allows you to admire various neviere—small rural dwellings once built by locals—and religious sites such as the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Alto, one of Europe’s highest Marian sanctuaries. The “Path of Peace” is another beautiful itinerary offering natural, historical-cultural and spiritual interest, though it’s primarily suited to experienced hikers. The route departs from Petralia Sottana and leads to Monte Alto, the heart of Madonie Park.

Another highly evocative yet easy-to-walk trail is the “Golden Eagle Trail”, a marked route starting from Piano Farina (in Petralia Sottana) that may offer the chance to spot golden eagles soaring through the park’s skies. Golden eagles nest on the highest Madonie peaks and are best observed during autumn. From the town of Collesano, a path known as the “Chestnut Forest Trail” winds through Madonie Park, allowing you to reach Case Rascata whilst walking through cork oak, oak and chestnut forests.

Within the park, you’ll also find numerous equestrian centres offering the chance to discover this land’s natural, historical and food and wine heritage on horseback. Many bridle paths follow ancient mule tracks and allow visits to locations such as Piano Pomo, Madonna dell’Alto Vallone, Madonna degli Angeli (home to several Abies Nebrodensis specimens), the evocative Tiberio Gorges and many places where cheeses and dairy products are made. Horse riding excursions suit both beginners and experienced riders, and local guides are available.

Finally, a route offering breathtaking views over the Tyrrhenian Sea, Cefalù’s headland, the Aeolian Islands and the Nebrodi mountains is Serra Daino Wood, a protected area located between Pollina and Finale. Here, a circular trail winds through a forest of valuable cork oaks and observation points affording spectacular panoramas. The area also features equipped picnic zones, barbecue facilities, toilets and wooden benches for enjoying convivial moments.

Piano Battaglia

Located at 1,600 metres altitude, Piano Battaglia is a small yet evocative ski resort within Madonie Park, positioned between the towns of Polizzi Generosa, Petralia Sottana and Isnello. Three ski lifts operate here, one of which reaches the summit of Monte Mufara (1,865 metres) in both winter and summer. During winter, this area attracts skiing enthusiasts, whilst in summer, immersive green excursions are possible. Three alpine ski slopes are available: Pista Scoiattolo, Pista Sparviero (approximately 3 km long with several variants) and Pista Vincenzo Mollica.

Madonie Adventure Park

Near Petralia Soprana lies the Madonie Adventure Park, a green equipped space where you can enjoy carefree fun amongst suspended bridges, cables, pulleys and trails that challenge participants’ agility. The Adventure Park offers entertaining courses for children and teenagers, who can spend a fun day outdoors, as well as seven treetop acrobatic courses for teenagers and adults.

The Adventure Park also organises orienteering activities, 4×4 excursions and archery activities.
