Terrasini

Located on the northern coast of Sicily, Terrasini is a charming seaside town overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, nestled between the sea and rolling hills. The name Terrasini itself is believed to derive from the Latin term “terra sinus”, meaning “land of the gulf”.

Terrasini lies between Capo Rama and Capo San Vito and is characterised by an irregular coastline featuring rocky coves, dramatic cliffs and golden beaches that offer breathtaking views. The town is also home to the beautiful Capo Rama Nature Reserve, which sits along important migratory routes and allows you to spot rare bird species.

This stretch of coast features several watchtowers including Torre Alba, Torre Toleda and Torre di Capo Rama. Torre di Capo Rama, the most prominent of these towers, was built in the 15th century and is unmissable, perched on its namesake headland high above the sea where you can enjoy truly spectacular panoramic views.

Terrasini Beaches

Terrasini’s coastline stretches between Spiaggia Ciucca and San Cataldo in Trappeto, captivating every visitor with its secluded coves and wonderfully crystalline waters. Its shoreline alternates between golden sandy beaches and sections of sheer rocky cliffs plunging into the sea. For this reason, you won’t find large beach resorts in Terrasini, but rather small beach clubs that also feature restaurants where you can sample excellent local cuisine.

The most famous beach is undoubtedly Praiola, located just near the town centre and a picturesque cove nestled between towering cliffs. Praiola is a free public beach that’s particularly lovely at sunset when you can watch the sun dip behind the Terrasini rock stacks. From the town centre, a long flight of steps leads down to this bay, characterised by golden sand and crystal-clear waters that shelve very gently.

Among the most beautiful stretches of coast is certainly Cala Rossa, named after the striking red colour of its tall cliffs that plunge dramatically into the sea, concealing small inlets and hidden coves. Cala Rossa is ideal for those who love cliff jumping and enjoy snorkelling or diving.

Nearby Beaches

Those choosing to visit this part of Sicily have a truly wide choice of beaches to explore. Close to Terrasini is the lovely Magaggiari beach, located in Cinisi and featuring a beautiful expanse of golden sand with numerous facilities where you can hire sunbeds and parasols, as well as free beach areas.

The beach at San Cataldo in Trappeto, meanwhile, lies right on the border with Terrasini near the mouth of the Nocella river. The beach consists of a stretch of pebbles mixed with sand and is bathed by wonderfully clear waters. Near San Cataldo you’ll also find Ciammarita beach, a long sandy stretch with shallow, sandy seabed waters, making it ideal for families with children. Ciammarita is also one of the most popular beaches with surfers, windsurfers and kite-surfers, as it’s one of the windiest spots in the area.
