South-eastern Sicily’s airport is located in Comiso, a town near Ragusa. It’s a smaller hub compared to Catania, Palermo and Trapani airports, so flight options are more limited, but it’s an excellent base if you want to concentrate your holiday in south-eastern Sicily.
The official name of the airport is Pio La Torre Airport (IATA code: CIY), named after the Sicilian MP killed by the Mafia. The airport is also known as Vincenzo Magliocco Airport, after the air force general to whom the airport was originally dedicated when it opened in 1939 as a military base. It was converted for civilian aviation and opened to commercial traffic in 2013.
The airport is served by several airlines including Aeroitalia, which operates continuity of service flights to Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, plus connections to Turin, Pisa and Bologna launched in 2026. Among international carriers, Vueling (Barcelona), Transavia (Paris), Wizz Air (Tirana) and Neos (Milan Malpensa, Verona) operate here. The range of destinations changes year on year, particularly for seasonal summer routes.
Being a small airport, facilities are limited but you’ll find all the essentials, including cafés and restaurants, shops, cash machines and free WiFi.
The airport is approximately 5 km from Comiso town centre and about 19 km from Ragusa. The best way to get around is by taxi or hire car, as public transport connections are rather limited.
If you’re in a hurry or want to travel in comfort, taxi is the most straightforward option: it’s reasonably priced, especially if you’re travelling with others and can split the fare. Taxis are available at the exit from the airport’s arrivals level. The typical fare to Comiso is around €10–13, while to Ragusa the cost increases in proportion to the distance.
A useful service is Sicily Shuttle, a transfer service for arriving and departing passengers that takes you to all the main towns in Ragusa province, the Noto Valley and other major Sicilian cities including Agrigento, Catania, Siracusa and Taormina. The advantage of this service is that the shuttle time is booked to match your flight arrival and the transfer is guaranteed even if there’s a delay. Another plus is that you’re taken directly to your destination address, whether a hotel or private home.
Alternatively, there are private transfer companies offering even more flexible services and in some cases more competitive prices.
You can use a bus from local coach operators like Tumino to reach Ragusa town centre and Marina di Ragusa. Regional coaches are also available for more distant destinations: SAL Autolinee connects the airport with Gela, Licata and Agrigento, whilst Etna Trasporti offers services to Ragusa, Catania and Gela. The bus to Catania also stops at Catania airport: this is the only direct connection between Comiso airport and other Sicilian airports.
Unfortunately, the bus isn’t a convenient option: services are infrequent, sometimes limited to certain days of the week, and checking timetables before you travel can be difficult because local transport companies often have outdated websites. Tickets are generally purchased on board.
A hire car is the recommended way to get to and from Comiso Airport: it gives you the freedom to go where you want, when you want. The airport can be easily reached by car from several directions; the main roads into the area are the SS514 Ragusa–Catania and the SS115 Agrigento–Siracusa. There are two paying car parks.
Several car hire companies operate at the airport. It’s advisable to book online in advance to guarantee availability and benefit from better rates, especially during the summer months.
To rent a car in Ragusa we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
