Donnalucata

A small hamlet of the municipality of Scicli, Donnalucata was once a modest fishing village, though it has since developed into a popular holiday destination whilst retaining the charm of its past. The village’s name is believed to derive from a freshwater spring that emerges onto the beach and which, during the Arab period, was known as “Ayn-al-awqat”.

Strolling along the beautiful seafront, you’ll find stunning stone villas dating from the nineteenth century, ancient chapels (such as the church dedicated to Santa Caterina, built in 1883) and buildings in Gothic style. By its small harbour sits a year-round fish market, where Mediterranean catch landed by local fishermen is sold fresh.

This charming hamlet has gained particular fame in recent years not only for its gorgeous beaches, but also because its seafront has been used multiple times as a filming location for the television drama “Il commissario Montalbano”.

Donnalucata Beach

The beach at Donnalucata stretches alongside the small harbour and features fine golden sand bathed by crystal-clear turquoise waters. This expansive shoreline is well-equipped with showers, a beach club offering parasol and sunbed hire, plus a bar and convenient car park. With such a spacious stretch of sand, even during peak season you’ll have little trouble finding a quiet spot to enjoy the sun.

Beyond this beach lies approximately 3 km of coastline featuring wilder, quieter stretches of sand, including Micenci, Spinasanta, Palo Bianco and Palo Rosso. The waters here are rather choppy, making them ideal for those keen on surfing and windsurfing.

Scicli boasts some 18 km of coastline and is home to beautiful beaches including Cava d’Aliga, Bruca, Sampieri, Donnalucata, Playa Grande and the Costa di Carro Nature Reserve. The beach at Cava d’Aliga, not far from Donnalucata, features sandy shores washed by clear waters with gently sloping seabeds.

Just a short distance from Cava d’Aliga you’ll find Bruca, one of the smallest coastal hamlets in Scicli. The shoreline here is characterised by fine golden sand and clear water with shallow, sandy seabeds – features that make this beach ideal for families with children.

Near the Irminio River Nature Reserve, in a truly scenic setting, sits the small bay of Playa Grande. This stretch of coast boasts fine sand and a beach club offering sunbed and parasol hire. During high season, it’s advisable to arrive early in the morning, as it tends to get quite busy.
