Pozzallo is an enchanting seaside town situated along Sicily’s southern coast, now renowned for its bustling port and breathtaking coastline, which attracts countless holidaymakers from across Italy during the summer months. Its maritime heritage has been evident since ancient times, with remains of an ancient emporium testifying that this territory served as an active trading centre as far back as Roman times. However, Pozzallo owes much of its development to the 14th century onwards, thanks to the construction of a grain loader—a complex of warehouses with jetties and cargo chutes for shipping merchandise—which gave the local economy a significant boost.

Its strategic location meant it frequently fell prey to pirates, and to protect themselves from attacks, locals built the Torre Cabrera between the 15th and 16th centuries, now the city’s symbol and part of its rich historical and architectural heritage alongside other monuments. A destination with strong tourism credentials, Pozzallo is a vibrant town and highly sought-after destination, particularly during the summer months when its beaches become havens for relaxation and fun. The municipality has been recognised multiple times in the Legambiente Blue Guide, awarded two blue sails for its commitment to promoting historical, artistic and natural resources whilst protecting the environment.

Pozzallo’s beaches

Pozzallo boasts a breathtaking coastline stretching almost 15 km, featuring fine golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters with sandy seabeds that slope gently in most places. The town’s beaches have earned both the Green Flag and the Blue Flag award, testament to water cleanliness and the availability of child-friendly facilities.

The most renowned beach is Pietre Nere, which with its ultra-fine sand and transparent sea, is perfect for sunbathing under the Sicilian sun whilst also catering to those seeking comfort and entertainment. The area is known for its extensive shoreline, alternating between free beach areas and numerous beach clubs packed with facilities, all essential services and children’s play areas. For these reasons, Pietre Nere is particularly popular with families and those keen on beach activities (such as volleyball, tennis, bowls) or water sports like SUP and kitesurfing.

Another well-equipped beach is Marina di Pozzallo, which offers sandy stretches with sun lounger and parasol hire and numerous other services. The sea waters are clear and crystalline with sandy seabeds that slope gently, and the shoreline is perfect for long sunset strolls.

Near the harbour, a quieter, wilder and unspoilt beach is Maganuco, renowned not only for its fine sand and transparent waters but also for being declared one of Italy’s finest beaches by Legambiente and Touring Club. Lush Mediterranean vegetation surrounds the beach, creating a truly captivating environment perfect for summer walks. Finally, another highly appreciated beach, located west of the harbour, is Raganzino Beach, situated in a sheltered inlet and characterised by fine, soft sandy shores much loved by families with children.

Things to do in Pozzallo

Beyond its beautiful beaches, Pozzallo also boasts a historic centre rich in sites of interest that tell the story of the town’s development from coastal village to successful seaside destination. The town’s heart is Piazza della Rimembranza, surrounded by historic buildings, bars and restaurants and serving as a local gathering spot, making it ideal for immersing yourself in the local atmosphere. Here stands the Town Hall, dedicated to Giorgio La Pira, a Pozzallo native who also served in the Constituent Assembly; the building was constructed in Liberty style and is surrounded by a verdant park featuring palms, oleanders and other trees.

The town’s symbol, however, is the Torre Cabrera, which rises along the shoreline and was erected for defensive purposes between the 15th and 16th centuries, though it was reconstructed following the 1693 earthquake that struck the island. Having become an important commercial port, Pozzallo frequently needed protection from sea attacks, and the tower served to spot approaching enemies and mount a defence. Nearby stands the Mother Church of Pozzallo, often called “Chiesa di San Pietro” though officially dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary). Consecrated in 1891, the religious building was constructed in neoclassical style, features a Latin cross layout and boasts three naves housing statues and works by local artists, notably two canvases by artist Roberto Porcelli. The apse contains a statue of the Madonna del Rosario, revered as the town’s patroness.

Another highly significant site is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Portosalvo, erected in the 18th century on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea to protect sailors and navigators departing from Pozzallo. The sanctuary features two facades: the original classical style and a more modern one added during reconstruction following Second World War damage. Inside, the religious complex is divided into three naves (two side naves and a central one) and houses an important wooden statue of the Mater Dolorosa (Sorrowful Mother) created by sculptor Francesco Verzella.

Evening entertainment in Pozzallo

The liveliest and most vibrant area in the evening is undoubtedly Lungomare Pietre Nere, brimming with bars, venues and restaurants and connected to Piazza Rimembranza and Corso Vittorio Veneto. An amphitheatre was built in this area where summer performances and musical and theatrical events are staged during the season.

Lungomare Raganzino, from the end of Corso Vittorio Veneto to Pozzallo Harbour, is equally bustling on warm summer evenings and ideal for seaside dining, a stroll, an excellent cocktail or ice cream. In June, the town hosts the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated as the patron saint’s feast with festivities and events. In August, the Fish Festival takes place, one of Sicily’s oldest and most famous gastronomic events, drawing visitors from across the region.
