Sicily enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. According to the Köppen classification, the island falls into the Csa category – a temperate climate of mid-latitudes – which makes it a destination worth visiting year-round. Average annual temperatures range between 16°C and 19°C depending on the area, with over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually along the southern coasts.

This climatic variety translates into landscapes that change throughout the year: from the sun-soaked beaches of summer to the spring blossoms inland, right through to the crisp, luminous panoramas of winter days. Understanding Sicily’s climate across the different seasons is essential for planning your trip, choosing appropriate clothing and making the most of every corner of the island.

Sicily in summer

Mondello Bay, Palermo

Sicily’s summer is hot and sunny, with temperatures regularly reaching 35°C in July and August and sometimes climbing to 40°C in inland areas and along the southern coast. Rainfall is virtually absent from June through September, gifting you weeks of clear skies and crystal-clear seas.

The heat is, however, predominantly dry, tempered by sea breezes along the coasts and the scirocco – a hot wind blowing from Africa that raises temperatures but lowers humidity to as low as 15%. The result is heat that feels less intense than in the more humid regions of northern Italy. Along the shoreline, afternoon breezes make the days more bearable, whilst in inland towns such as Enna or Caltanissetta, the heat can feel more intense.

Sea temperatures reach 25-27°C in July and August, making Sicily ideal for seaside holidays. The bathing season typically extends from late May to October, with excellent conditions for swimming and water sports.

Sicily in winter

Snow-capped Mount Etna

Sicilian winter is mild and wet, with rainfall concentrated mainly between November and February. Average temperatures hover around 10-12°C along the coasts and drop to 7°C in inland areas, but rarely approach freezing except at the highest peaks of Mount Etna and the Madonie mountains.

Sea currents and warm air flows from the Mediterranean maintain an overall mild climate even in the coldest months. November and December often bring days with temperatures around 15°C, perfect for visiting historic towns and archaeological sites without the summer crowds. Snowfall affects only mountainous areas above 1,000 metres, offering striking views of the snow-capped Etna.

Winter is not a harsh season, but it does require travellers to pack suitable clothing for rain and cooler evenings, particularly in January and February, when the year’s lowest temperatures are recorded.

Spring and autumn in Sicily

The Ancient Theatre of Taormina

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons for those wishing to explore Sicily with pleasant temperatures and without the summer crowds. Temperatures average around 18-22°C, with bright days and gentle breezes that make any outdoor activity enjoyable.

Spring, particularly between April and May, is the best period for inland excursions, visits to nature reserves such as the Madonie Park and discovering historic villages. The Sicilian countryside bursts into bloom, with citrus groves in full production and golden wheat fields. The sea also begins to warm, reaching swimming temperatures by late May.

Autumn, especially September and October, retains summer’s residual warmth with pleasant temperatures around 22-25°C. Rain gradually returns from November onwards, but sunny days remain frequent. These two in-between seasons are perfect for those who dislike excessive heat and want to visit Sicily with the certainty of avoiding both the summer humidity and the rainier days of winter.

When to visit Sicily

The Valley of the Temples

The best time to visit Sicily depends on the type of holiday you’re after. For seaside getaways, the ideal window runs from June to September, with July and August being the hottest but also the busiest months. Those preferring milder temperatures and quieter beaches will find June and September an excellent compromise.

For cultural tourism and visits to sites like the Valley of the Temples, Taormina or Syracuse, the spring months of April and May and the autumn months of October and November offer ideal conditions: pleasant temperatures, perfect light for photography and better value for flights and accommodation.

Winter is recommended for those wanting to discover a different side of Sicily, with Palermo‘s Christmas markets, food festivals and the chance to ski on Etna in the morning and stroll by the sea in the afternoon.

What to pack

In summer, pack lightweight cotton or linen clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen. Don’t forget comfortable shoes for visiting archaeological sites and a scarf for entering churches. A light jacket can be useful for evenings, especially in inland areas where temperatures drop after sunset.

For winter, intermediate jackets, an umbrella and waterproof shoes are sufficient. Heavy coats aren’t necessary: even in the coldest months, temperatures along the coasts stay above 10°C. If you’re planning mountain excursions or a visit to Etna, add warmer, windproof clothing.

In spring and autumn, layering is your best approach: t-shirts, light shirts, a jumper and a windproof jacket will allow you to adapt easily to temperature swings between cool mornings and mild afternoons. A compact umbrella is always handy, especially during the transitional months.
