Portopalo di Capo Passero is a charming town in the province of Syracuse situated at the meeting point between the waters of the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean. The town boasts a truly ancient history and was long known first as Capo Pachino, then Terra Nobile, and finally as Portopalo.

Portopalo was founded around 1778 thanks to the initiative of Don Gaetano Deodato Moncada, who built a village around the tuna fishery not only for fishermen, but also for the local farmers and shepherds. Today the town is particularly renowned for its stunning coastline, which features both soft sandy beaches and sheer cliff faces overlooking the sea.

The municipality also encompasses two islands located just offshore from the town: Capo Passero Island and Correnti Island, which conceal marvellous natural landscapes.

Beaches of Portopalo di Capo Passero

Portopalo di Capo Passero lies along a particularly varied stretch of coastline that boasts soft sandy beaches and rocky coves plunging into the sea. The town’s main beach is called Two Seas Beach1 and is nestled between the Portopalo Tuna Fishery and Capo Passero Island. Here a golden sand beach alternates with rocky sections, whilst the sea waters are crystal-clear with gently sloping depths. The beach’s characteristics, combined with the availability of facilities and equipped lidos, make this the ideal spot for families and anyone seeking comfort and relaxation.

Fantastic sandy beaches surrounded by unspoilt nature can also be found on Capo Passero Island2. The island is accessible on foot during low tide and by small boat during high tide, and boasts truly transparent waters. There are also areas of wild rocky coastline accessible only by sea and some fascinating sea caves, such as the Octopus Grotto.

Another particularly striking stretch of coast is Formiche Beach3, located between Amber Coast and Correnti Island along the road from Portopalo towards Maucini. The beach is characterised by fine, soft sand, whilst the sea waters are crystal-clear with gently sloping depths.

Finally, worthy of mention is Playa Carratois4, a sandy beach located approximately seven kilometres from Portopalo’s town centre and a peaceful spot to spend relaxing days. The stretch of coast from Correnti Island to Playa Carratois is ideal for those who enjoy windsurfing.

Things to do in Portopalo di Capo Passero

The heart of Portopalo di Capo Passero is Via Vittorio Emanuele5, which divides the town centre in two and hosts various bars, restaurants and shops. A visit to the tranquil Correnti Island6, Italy’s southernmost territory, is a must-do, boasting crystalline waters and truly breathtaking landscapes characterised by wild and unspoilt nature.

A visit to Capo Passero Island is also not to be missed. Besides stunning beaches, it is home to the Capo Passero Fort7, a structure built on a limestone rock at the island’s highest point. The Fort was constructed for defensive purposes under the direction of Sicily’s viceroy Marcantonio Colonna and dates back to the early 17th century. In the 19th century, a small lighthouse was also built beside the keep.
