Idyllic beaches, crystal-clear waters and relaxation are the main draws that make Favignana one of the most sought-after destinations during the summer months. Hidden amongst wonderful tufa quarries, Cala Rossa is a small beach on the island of Favignana, characterised by transparent, crystalline waters and a truly marvellous natural setting.
Considered one of the finest beaches not only in Sicily but throughout the Italian peninsula, Cala Rossa is defined by large rocks, some flattened out where you can sit, whilst to the west there’s a small sandy cove. The rocks surrounding the beach grow progressively higher, and from the top you can enjoy a stunning panorama and be captivated by the brilliant azure of the sea.
According to ancient legend, the name of this bay is said to derive from a fierce battle between Romans and Carthaginians in 241 BC. During this clash, the sheer number of casualties allegedly caused the seawater in this area to turn red.
Once you’ve arrived on Favignana island by one of the ferries or hydrofoils departing from Trapani, you can reach Cala Rossa beach by car, motorbike or alternatively by bicycle. After passing through Favignana town, continue along the northern coast of the island, as far as a viewpoint situated directly above the beach where you’ll need to leave your vehicle and proceed on foot. From here you’ll follow a dirt track which takes around 10 minutes on foot to reach the beach.
Alternatively, the beach is easily accessible by boat from the sea. This can be a very practical option for families with children, as the dirt track, especially uphill at the end of the day, can be quite challenging in places.
One of the best areas to stay in Favignana for easy access to Cala Rossa is undoubtedly the town centre. Favignana town is the ideal location for those seeking a comfortable stay whilst still enjoying the authentic atmosphere of the island.
Alternatively, those looking for peace and quiet and not particularly interested in nightlife can opt for accommodation away from the historic centre, along the seafront or in the wilder areas of the island.
Located in the north-eastern part of Favignana island, Cala Rossa is a beach less than 5 km from Favignana town centre and just over 3 km from the stunning Cala Azzurra beach.
